Goals of this site

The primary outcome of this intervention is to provide Portland-based musicians with greater visibility, particularly those with limited social media followings and financial resources. The pandemic severely disrupted emerging artists’ careers, as many struggled to maintain visibility due to the loss of live performances. By centralizing information on upcoming shows, music releases, and merchandise, the website will make it easier for local fans to discover new talent and support local artists. This aligns with research on social capital, where the ability to build networks and relationships within a scene is crucial to artist success . The platform will focus on local, independent musicians who rely on live performances and often struggle to gain traction through mainstream platforms.

Another goal is to provide artists with additional revenue streams through merchandise sales and direct ticket promotion. Live performances have become the main source of income for many musicians, and this intervention aims to reinforce this revenue stream by making it easier for fans to locate and attend local shows. Also, having a centralized hub where musicians can sell merchandise directly to their audience allows them to leverage their fan base for economic support beyond performances. The platform could also explore options for artists to promote virtual concerts, a practice that emerged during the pandemic.

A third key outcome is to foster a sense of collaboration and community within the Portland music scene. Live music ecologies thrive when musicians, venues, and fans can work together, sharing resources and knowledge. This platform will provide not only promotion opportunities but also a space for collaboration. Musicians can connect with one another for shared gigs, and even mentorship for newer artists, enhancing the overall strength of the scene.

The proposed intervention addresses the problem by providing a centralized, easy-to-access platform that builds upon the existing social and cultural capital of the Portland music scene. According to the literature, local music economies are fragile and heavily dependent on live performances for revenue, and the COVID-19 pandemic exposed this fragility. By providing a space where musicians can promote their work and connect with fans, regardless of online clout, the platform offers a solution that is tailored to the needs of independent artists. Furthermore, fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the local scene will help musicians, venues, and fans strengthen their connections, leading to increased resilience and sustainability.
